Brief Description:  Rudder

This log documents my work on the rudder assembling the rudder frame. I began work on the rudder by seperating and smoothing the edges of the Vertical Spar Reinforcement plates, and then attatched them to the Vertical Spar (parts R-606PP,-607PP, -608PP, and R-902 Spar). After attaching them with clecos, I matchdrilled all of the holes, and also prepared the hinges to be test fit.

Following that I created the R-917 rudder shim from the suppplied 0.032" 2024-T3 stock supplied to create the lower rudder shim and rudder attachment strips for the lower fiberglass fairing. After cutting the shim to the proper length, and rounding the edges, I smoothed the piece on the scotchbrite wheel. I then used the plans to identify the placement of the three holes and drilled them into the plate. This was a mistake in fabrication, as the incructions only called for only one hole. After noting the mistaske, the shim was turned around, correctly fabricated, and properly drilled following the instructions.

However, this shim will need to be refabricated as the incorrectly drilled holes may interfere with other holes that must pass through the structure. So I will use a piece of 0.032" 2024-T3 from the trim bundle to recreate the R-917 shim. Stay tuned for a further entry.
