Brief Description:  Horizontal Stab Forward Spar

Today I cut the relief holes in the HS-702 Forward Spar. After double checking the marks on the forward spar, I used a center punch to mark the location of the #40 pilot holes. Then using a #40 drill bit I drilled the pilot holesin the spar. I then expanded the holes to the directred side using the Uni-Bit. Afte the holes were drilled, I then opened up the holes to the edge of the Spar tab to make a resulting channel with a vixen file and a rat tail file.

At the same time my brother Edward, who was in town with his family, was working with me, and I had him cut the tapers into HS-710 and HS-714 Angle stock using the bandsaw. Following the cuts, he removed the cut marks and burs, and rounded the edges of the reinforcement angle stock using the scotch brite wheel.

Next, we bent the HS-710, HS-714, and both HS-702's to a 6 degree angle as called for in the plans (Drawing #3). To accomplish this first we created a 6 degree template from cardboard. To bend the reinforcement angle stock, we first checked our measurerment to the bend line, then affixed the angle stock into a 6 inch vise, and slowly bent the material to the desired angle. to bend the HS-702 Spars, we attached the spar tabs to the work bench using c-clamps and srap pieces of 2x4 boards. We then slowly bent the spar by raising it up to create a 6 degree angle.

Following the successful cuts and bends, we measured, marked, and rough cut the HS-00006 fwd Horiztonal Stab Ribs to fit inside the forward spar reinforcement angle. And we also trial fit the spar reinforcement plates to the spar and clecoed the entire assembly together to check that we prepared all of the parts correctly.
