Brief Description:  First Day of Work on the Empennage

Today was my first official work day on the airplane. I only accomplished a few things and have to consistently remind myself that no airplane was built in a day. Nevertheless it felt good to finally start on some part of my own airplane. I began the build by selecting, marking, and match drilling the rear horizontal spar reinforcement bars to the horizontal stabilizer rear spar using a #30 drill bit.

After completing that task, the instruction directed that I match drill the rear spar elevator hinges to the attachment points noted on Drawing # 4. The attachment points are noted by counting the number of holes along the rear spar to find the correct location, and then upszed the holes from a #30 hole to a #21 hole to make the appropriate space for the AN bolts that will secure the hinges to the spar and spar reinforcement bars.

I also match drilled the HS-411 BP Elevator Hinge Brackets and the VA-146 Hinge Bearing. This was accomplished by assembling the powder coated elevator hinges to the aluminum VA-146 hinge bracketss, then pinning the assembly together using Clecos. After assembling, I marked the assembly to be able to orient the parts. Finally I match drilled drilled all of the holes with a #30 drill bit as per the Drawing #3 Section E-E.

As called for in the instructions, I also "broke" the ends of the HS-609PP and rounded the ends of the perscribed radius on Drawing #3. See Image #3...

Finally I marked the taper on the HS-710 Reinforcement Angle and HS-714 Splice Angle as per Drawing #3. See the bottom of Image #2.
