Brief Description:  Rivet doubler to web, shims, and front rib attach

Rivet doubler to web, shims, and front rib attach

We riveted the doubler to the left spar web, using AN470-4-9 rivets for the inboard and outboard edges of the doubler. I cut AN 470-4-12's down to get the -9's. The riveting proceeded w/o any problems.

When I attempted to rivet the middle 5/32" rivet that holds the no. 3 front nose rib attach angle, the angle popped off the (standard 5/32") clecoes, and got in the way of the bucking bar, and then the rivet then backed out. I had to use a burr with my die grinder to remove the head from the rivet, and then drive out the messed up rivet.

For the second attempt, I used long-reach 5/32" bolt type clecoes to attach the shim, doubler plate, and rib attach angle to the web. Then I used 6-32x1" machine screws to hold the pieces tightly and securely together. Next we drove the middle rivet, then the top rivet, then the bottom rivet. Then I removed the 6-32 screws, and drove the final two rivets. The attached doubler is shown in Figs. 1 & 2.

I couldn't attach the 2nd nose rib attach angle, because the holes for the angle are also used for rear rib no. 4, which I'm not yet ready to attach. I plan to attach rear rib no. 4 with 1/8" solid rivets.
