Brief Description: R aileron piano hinge conversion
|
|
1. Cut the aileron attachment flange down to 20-mm from the front of the aileron.
2. Cut the rear half of the piano hinge to match the newly cut attachment flange.
3. Mark the hinge half for rivets, aligned with the rivets on the aileron top flange joint.
4. On the drill press, pilot drill 3/32" the marked holes on the piano hinge half and deburr.
5. Clamp the hinge half to the top of the attachment flange, back drill 3/32" the attachment flange.
6. Cleco the hinge half to the bottom of the attachment flange.
7. Cut a piece of L-angle for the hinge reinforcement.
8. Mark the L-angle holes for the front of the aileron, aligned with the aileron top joint rivets.
9. On the drill press, pilot drill 3/32" the marked holes on the L-angle.
10. Clamp the L-angle to the attachment flange and hinge half, tightly against the front of the aileron, starting at the inboard end, drill & cleco 3/32" to the front of the aileron, moving the clamps outward to stay in front of the drilling.
11. After checking alignment of the hinge half and attachment flange, clamp the L-angle, hinge half, and attachment flange together, starting at the inboard end, and back drill and cleco 3/32" the L-angle through the holes in the attachment flange and hinge half. See Fig. 1.
13. Drill 1/8" & #30 and cleco the holes through the L-angle and aileron front.
14. Drill 1/8" and #30 and cleco the holes through the attachment flange, hinge half, and L-angle. See Fig. 2.
I felt it was easier modifying the aileron for the piano hinge before I removed the rivets for the aileron counter balance installation because the aileron was tightly held together.
