Brief Description:  Rivet practice

More rivet practice, another 12 rivets

Lessons learned:

1. I did the riveting on the jig shown in the 2/15 entry. Usually I clamped the bars to the jig with 4" C-clamps. For a couple of rivets, I used fast clamps with plastic padded jaws. The mfg head was badly mangled as shown in the right hand most rivet in Fig. 1 when I used the fast clamps.

I conclude that the fast clamps just do not hold the bars tightly enough. One of the driven heads from a fast clamped job was pushed way off to the side. The bar moves under the rivet gun impact, and subsequent gun impacts on the rivets form multiple smiles on the mfg head.

2. Again, I conclude that I had been driving the rivets too far. As shown in Fig. 2, the driven heads in this practice session meet the min diameter spec.

3. I tried drilling out the rivets using a 5/32" bit in the rivet removal tool. The 5/32 bit wandered and ended up putting the hole off center. I conclude that with my skill level, I'd best spend the extra time to drill 1st to 1/8", and then to 5/32".

4. I found that, after drilling the rivet head, it worked very well to clear the drilling debris from the tool with compressed air, though that did splatter some oil onto the floor.
