Brief Description: Tool Box practice project from Vans Aircraft
While waiting for a small part to continue working on the left elevator I decided to break out the Tool Box Project that I purchased from Vans last year. I has basic drilling out, dimpling, and flush / standard riveting. It also has a hinge installation that is very similar to the hinge that will be needed to attach the elevator trim tab. Sooo I thought it would be a great time to practice and see if there are any special things to lookout for when setting up and installing a hinge. So far pretty straight forward. Looks like the eyelets (bent over aluminum that make the cylinder part of a hinge the wire goes through) is installed right up against the edge of the skin. Need to verify this for the trim tab install - it would make keeping everything lined up and straight MUCH easier. Also need to be careful and use plenty of clamps / support when drilling holes in hinge material. Hinge material is very flexible and bends / bows easily. Perhaps drilling into a scrap piece of wood with the hinge / skin clamped to it would be even better.
