Brief Description:  Building work table

The finished product was more expensive than I originally expected, but will serve well after plane is completed. The base is narrower than the top, acting like a "toe-kick" on a kitchen counter. The base has 6 "lockable" 4" rollers (and lots of room underneath top for storage). The top has a 2" lip for clamps, and all screws are placed from bottom, so top is clean and smooth.Since the top is flat, it's a simple matter to "level" the top when necessary, and the top is simply c-clamped to home-made saw horses (so height can change on a whim). To raise, or lower, table by myself I use a 2x4 under table (across the 4' width) on a car jack. Initially I set it for what I think is a good height to work on wings.Added weight of plywood top did not change "flat-ness" ( 1/32") of table over 12' (due largely to the 5" 6061-T6 channel AL on the edges).Actual construction time was more than 33 hours on log, but Kitlog doesn't allow an easy way to extend hours. Actual was more like 60 hours, spread over 60 days when you count planning, driving, drilling, assembly time.Material costs for this table are about $500. Labor costs are $0 (..and when you're retired you never get a day off) Table is very flat!I cover the table with construction paper while working to make it easier to clean up. I also have a 12' x 4' low nap carpet piece to roll out when I want to protect a piece I'm working on. Problem is the carpet is a "chip" magnet when I'm drilling. Thought about painting or finishing the top, but decided against it, so that mositure would come and go from both sides (top and bottom) of plywood. Hopefully this will help maintain flatness....?Anyone wishing to go to this extent can reach me at my email address on the Zenith list and we can discuss it into the ground.
