Brief Description:  Finished riveting the R elevator.

This morning I worked on riveting the R elevator skin to the skeleton with some help from my little ray of sunshine, Justine. She wanted to go to her friend Sage's house in the worst way so I bribed her into helping me in exchange for going there in the afternoon. She did a nice job and helped for one whole hour and six minutes according to her, six minutes longer than the contract, but who is counting. I think she enjoyed herself and even learned a new word or two.....cleco, squeezer, rib, spar. She thinks I am a dork and am having a "nerd-fest" in the garage. It's a good thing she is cute.

Anyway, we did make some good progress. The first thing I did was to put bubblegum sized blobs of gray silicone at the juncture of each stiffener at the trailing edge of the elevator skin, stinky stuff according to J-Dawg. This is to tie the stiffeners together to prevent cracking while still allowing some minimal movement. Gerry says that silicone will work better as it stays somewhat pliable, while the proseal cures too hard and rigid - good enough explanation for me.

After placing the silicone globs on, we riveted the skin to the ribs and spar. Just as we were getting to the rivets at the very narrow ends of the ribs, Tanner brought a freshly dropped off package by UPS from Avery Tools. My new no-hole yoke for the squeezer arrived just in time. It worked well in the close quarters at the end of the ribs, but I still had to use a flush pulled rivet. Look in the "Tools" tab for a picture of it. The elevator looks really nice.
