Brief Description:  Instrument Panel CAD - Version 1.4.0

Since the panel wiring is about 98% complete, it was time to update the instrument panel layout in the CAD. Over the course of the panel installation, I'd been keeping a list of things that needed to be update on the metal panel. "Make instrument holes .010" bigger for power coating clearance", "Enlarge screw holes", "Move USB ports up by .25"", etc. Taking all of the updates from the installation of the Lexan instrument panel, I updated the CAD drawing for the instrument panel. Updates included specifically:

* Enlarging all cutouts by .010" on each side to account for power coating.

* Made the three cutouts on the left side for the HX, Transponder, and Nav/Com all one.

* Updated all of the mounting screw hole sizes to the correct size.

* Front mounting holes for all three HX displays will now take standard 6/32 Rivnut inserts

* Rearranged the USB ports to account for the rear mounting flanges.

* Noted on the diagram with a hash, the area behind the VP-200 mounting hole that is to be milled out. This is to bring the VP-200 out by .063" and make it flush with the panel. This accounts for the use of a .125" panel instead of the stock .063" panel material.

I'm currently using the Lexan panel that ExperimentalAir.com made for me based on my initial panel CAD layout. I updated the CAD drawing and fixed everything I had wrote down and a couple of things I hadn't, exported a .DXF Autocad formatted file and emailed to Nick.

The cost of cutting the panels including the Lexan mockup and final metal part, materials (Lexan and 2024-T3 .125"), and the special boss machining in the back came to about $570. Worth every penny, in my opinion.

Nick is really great to work with and I highly recommend his service. You can contact him directly at nick@experimentalair.com.
