I finally got the new Dynon ADSB transceiver installed in the RV-6 on Friday with the help of my buddy Mike and Saturday I was able to get up and do some testing between the rain drops. What was suppose to be about a 4 installation hour job, turned into a 13 hour nightmare. I didn't get home until 12:30am on Saturday morning and it was 38F degrees in the hangar around that time! I thought that was going to be able to just mount the ADSB tranceiver box in the back of the fuselage near the elevator bellcrank, drill a couple of holes for the new antenna, and then just plug the unit into the Skyview Net Cable connecting it into the Bus with all of the other network enabled devices. Well, nope. Turns out that the Dynon ADSB transceiver has a traditional RS232 connection and has to be connected to a "free" serial port on the Dynon Skyview display unit. Well, as luck would having it, I was fresh out of ports on my Skyview with all 5 ports already being dedicated to various I/O like comms with the primary GPS, the Garmin 696 secondary GPS, the ModeS transponder, and the Vertical Power VP-200. So, something had to go. I opted to eliminate the Dynon GPS module, since I was getting position information from the Garmin 696 too and I needed to transmit data from the Dynon to feed Traffic information to the Garmin 696. I hate not having a backup GPS source, but something had to go. The Skyview has two unused USB ports in the back, and I suggested to the Dynon tech support that the should support those USB-to-RS232 cables which allow users to expand to as many RS232 ports as they happened to need.
