Brief Description:  Engine Compartment Reassembly - Part 01

Project HOBBS Meter: 54 Days

With the interior and instrument panel nearing completion, it was time to start focusing on the engine compartment again. I had pulled a lot of junk off the original installation and I had a lot of shiny new parts to put back on.

I plan to install new P-Mags on the RV-8 when I get it back in the air, so I decided to install the two Slick mags from the IO-390 in the RV-6. These mags are completely compatible with the O-360 and only have about 170 hours on them. I also installed eight new spark plugs (two per cylinder), and a brand new ignition harness. I have a mag timing kit that I got for the RV-8, but I've never had an opportunity to use it. I'm happy to report that my first, from scratch, timing installation seems to have worked perfectly, as the motor started on the 2nd blade after having sat for two months. Sweet! Another marketable skill... ;-) I have to say that the engine really runs nice now with the new mags, new plugs, new harness, and fresh timing. Its extremely smooth and idles really well. Takeoff performance also seems noticeably better too. It leans out nicely at cruse and I can get 7.9 GPH without too much effort.

I installed the new, all-chrome valve covers and valve cover screws which really made things looks sweet under the cowling! I replaced all of the primer lines with all new copper and fittings. I added a myriad of new transducers including new Oil Pressure, Oil Temperature, Fuel Pressure x 2, Fuel Flow x 2, Carb Temperature and all new 4-cylinder EGT and CHT probes. Originally there was only a single EGT and CHT probe and neither seemed to work all that well. I added new SCAT tubing for the oil cooler and for the cabin heater ducting.
