Brief Description: Riveting Rudder and Installing Static Wick Rivnuts
Install rivnuts for static wicks. I bought a multi purpose rivnut instillation tool from Cardinal Products. When I tried to install the 4-40 rivnuts, the installation tool sucked up the guts of the rivnuts thru the space left between the normal #8 sized hole and the mandrel.
Rivnuts installed in accordance with Dayton-Granger drawings P/N 16630 and RV-8 Drawing: Discharger Installation Diagram Van’s RV-8
I called Cardinal for help. Mark, he engineer did not completely understand my problem. I was able to find a washer that left a smaller space between the mandrel and was able to set the rivnuts. However if I tightened the tool too much, it would still pull the rivnuts thru the installation tool.
After calling Mark back to tell him what I found, I ordered the correct installation tool from Meegan at Cardinal along with some (free) sample rivnuts to replace those that I destroyed.
I was able to complete the installation process using the small washer. I will wait for the tool when I install the rivnuts on the elevator assembly.
Installed the rudder skeleton in preparation for riveting skins to under structure.
