Brief Description:  First Flight in a RV-8 near Ottawa

Following the old adage "You need to try before you buy", I had been looking to meet a RV-7 or RV-8 owner to get a chance to at least sit in one of those aircraft before commiting to large amount of money on a homebuilt aircraft kit. On Friday evening January 4, after doing a quick Internet research on RV-8 owners in Eastern Canada, I sent an e-mail to Kevin Horton in the Ottawa, Ontario area. It turned out that Kevin responded me in less than one hour, and invited me to visit him in Smith Falls, Ontario the next day to check out his airplane.

I drove 3.5 hours to Smith Falls, not expecting it to be so far away from Montreal, on that nice and cold Saturday morning. I finally arrived just past lunch time. I met with Kevin and introduced ourselves in the parking lot. He told me he had to help out a fellow RV-7A owner to get his airplaine out of the hangar. This was my luck, as I could check out the RV-7A and sit in it before cheking out the RV-8. Later, I sat in Kevin's RV-8, and loved it better than in the -7A....

Kevin offered to go for a short flight, which obviously I couldn't decline. What a great flight ! Loved the take off performance, the little acrobatics and the overall speed of the aircfraft. For a short time, we also did formation flight with the RV-7A I sat in maybe an hour earlier...Well coming back from that flight, I had the RV Grin. I had to build a RV-8....
