Brief Description:  Horizontal Stabilizer Inspection

Tonight the horizontal stabilizer was inspected prior to installing the rear spar. All the rivets looked good and the overall assessment was that the construction was being done correctly. We did have one rivet at the junction of the skin, forward spar and aft center rib that received a little more inspection attention. At this point, three pieces of metal are being joined and it can be difficult to get all three to lay flat when setting the rivet. The other three junctions were fine. I believe this is the first one that we had riveted. We tried to leave too many clecoes in the skin around the rivet which prevented us from getting in tight on the rivet. We had discussed this after setting the rivet and changed our procedure to removing two clecos side to side and aft of the rivet. This gave us plenty of access to hold everything down tight. Our inspector suggested using an extra piece of metal to hold the three pieces tight and then give it one tap with the gun to start setting the rivet. This would hold things tightly together and then allow you to finish the job without the extra hold down piece.

Bottom line, don't do anything with the rivet, it is fine and everything else looks good. Time to touch up any scratches in the primer from bucking and then install the aft spar.
