Brief Description:  First Engine Strart

Removed the duct tape from the sump heater. The adhesive is cured and looks uniform.

Reinstalled the boost pump and hooked up the lines. Connected a temporary aluminum line to the engine side of the firewall fuel fitting and placed the exit side in a fuel can. Turned on the boost pump and pumped about a half-gallon of fuel into a plastic fuel can to flush out the boost pump and the fuel lines upstream from the firewall. Reconnected the fuel line to the firewall fitting

Removed the dehydration plugs from the top spark plug holes and reinstalled/torqued the spark plugs.

Removed the bottom spark plugs and rotated the engine by hand a few revolutions to remove any remaining preservation oil.

Filled the engine with 6 quarts of 40 wt mineral oil.

Spun the engine with the starter until oil pressure was indicated on the sky view. It took quite a bit of turning before the needle moved but it finally read about 20 psi. Reinstalled the bottom spark plugs.

Pushed the airplane out of the hangar, chocked the wheels and tied it to Dave V’s truck with a tow strap.

Attempted the first engine start but after a couple of blades the engine wouldn’t turn. All that spinning of the engine to get the oil pressure up took its toll on the battery.

I grabbed the solid state jump starter from my truck and hooked it up to the battery and tried again to start the engine. I primed it with the boost pump, opened the throttle ¼ inch and kept the mixture at idle cut off. I hit the start button and the engine spun well but wouldn’t catch.

The next attempt was with the mixture full rich and that time the engine caught after a couple of blades and roared to life. It ran strong and smooth and sounded great. I ran it for about 10 minutes waiting for the oil temp to rise above 100 degrees at which point I advanced the throttle to 2400 rpm. It continued to run strong with on issues. Throttle back to idle, mixture to idle cut off and it shut right off.

Post run inspection found no leaks or anything else of concern. T
