Brief Description:  Wheel fairings part 3

The instructions from Van’s say to align the center of the aft wheel fairing half with the center of the tire. With the fuselage on stands and the landing gear off the ground, the tires have a significant outward camber so to align the fairing with the tire the fairing must be canted outboard to match. In order to do this I used my laser level. First I had to stop the level from shutting off when the line isn’t level/plumb. To do that I disassembled it and slipped a short piece of shrink tubing over the little spring that contacts the ground ring when the level isn’t level. This allowed it to stay on in any position. I reassembled the level and mounted it to a tripod. I then placed the tripod near the tail of the airplane and directed it so that laser line was parallel to the fuselage centerline and on the tire center line. Since the tire was canted out I adjusted the tripod so that the laser plumb line was canted at the same angle as the tire.

With the laser line aligned, I slipped the aft wheel fairing half back on the wheel, lined its centerline up with the laser plumb line and marked on the fairing where I still had to remove some material to clear the landing gear leg and the tire. I did this a few times until the fairing fit per the plans.

With everything lined up I clamped the aft fairing half in place and match drilled the holes in the U-808 bracket through the fairing skin clecoing each hole as I went. I then placed a flashlight inside the fairing so that I could see the outline of the nut plates for mounting the inboard surface of the fairing to the bracket. I then drilled through the center of the nut plates and installed clecos.
With the aft fairing half clecoed in place I installed the forward half, marked where it needed a little more trimming, removed it, trimmed it, and put it back on until the cleco holes common to both fairing halves lined up. I then used the flash light technique to drill the two holes that hold the forward fairing
At this point I started on the RH wheel
