I was never happy with the fuel line that I fabricated a few years ago that ran from the fuel filter, through the LH gear tower, and to the boost pump. The line fit OK, and the flares were acceptable, but the soft aluminum tubing is easily damaged, and the close quarters inside the LH gear tower makes it easy to dent the fuel line when trying to tighten the brake fittings. That’s exactly what happened when I first attempted to tighten the fitting on the bottom of the brake line in the tower. I managed to put a small dent in the line. It was most likely fine and wouldn't cause an issue (flow restriction or crack) but it bugged me and I was concerned that I'd do further damage in the future.
I called TS Flightlines to see if they sell a fuel line for that application. It turned out they have a complete RV-8 fuel hose kit so I ordered not only the filter-to-boost pump hose, but also the filter-to-fuel valve hose and a hose and fitting that would take the place of the one with two 180 degree bends that I made per the plans. The TS Flight lines design replaces the exit fitting on the boost pump with a 90 degree fitting and then there’s a hose with a 90 degree bend at the aft end and a short length of hose that runs to the firewall fitting. This is a much simpler, cleaner installation.
Today I cut the old filter-to-boost pump line that I had made and pulled the forward and aft segments out of the gear tower. I then opened up the holes to 3/4 inch diameter with a uni-bit and then used a dremel sanding drum to open the hole a little more so that the fuel line end fittings would pass through. With the fuel line removed I tightened the brake line fitting at the bottom of the gear tower.
I then installed all the fittings along with the fuel valve to check the fit. Everything fits well and I extremely happy with the hoses. They have a braided exterior and are somewhat flexible so they will be less likely to be damaged.
