Brief Description:  Empennage tips part 2

Installed the horizontal and vertical stabilizers on the fuselage. Installed the rudder.

Fit the vertical stabilizer cap to the stabilizer. Trimmed the aft edge to clear the rudder. When the cap was installed with the joggle adjacent to the flange seated against the aluminum skin, the tip sat 1/4 inch above the cap on the rudder. To fix this I used a small sanding drum on a dremel tool to remove material from the cap to effectively widen the flange. I then had to trim some material from the bottom of the cap.

I trial fit it again and it fit well, so I clamped it in place and drilled the pilot holes for the rivets.

Cut a piece of 1/8 inch aircraft plywood to match the aft end of the cap. Bonded it to the cap with 5 minute epoxy. Next I laid up two plies of fiberglass over both cap flanges to reinforce where I had widened the flanges because I had removed a little too much material.

Mixed up some epoxy/flox and applied a bead to the inside corner of the plywood to fiberglass intersection at the back of the cap
