Brief Description:  Wing Structure

The Wing Ribs came already formed in the kit. However there were a few cut outs and a lot of reinforcement gusset parts to be bent. These gussets once bent become the attach angles to the Spar and the Wing Ribs. The gussets kit parts came pilot hole drilled.

I found it difficult to understand the plans as to the direction of the bends, so this took me some time. I laid out all the Ribs and Gussets (aft and forward) in their order next to the Main Spar to help understand the bend directions. Each generally had a 90 degree bend on two of the sides. The first bend could be done in the metal break but the second bend conflicted with the metal break operation. The Gusset could be clamped in the metal break and a bend line could be made to about 30 degrees. A vice clamp and clamping vice grip were used to complete the second bend.

Once all the gussets were bent they were clamped to the formed ribs and drilled, up drilled, deburred and riveted as per the plans.

Once all the ribs were fabricated the Wing Structure could be dry fitted (clecoed) using the predrilled pilot holes in the Rib Gussets and the Main Spars. Spacers were required to provide a flush fit of the Ribs to the Spar. The spacer are not predrilled so each has to be clamped in place to the Spar and Rib and drilled. Once all are drilled then they can be clecoed, up drilled, disassembled and deburred a reclecoed before the final riveting.

Some of the rivet locations were a challenge to reach with the rivet Gun. I have seen rivet guns with extra-long noses but I did not have one.
