The wing rib jigs that arrived from Bill Scheunemann a beautiful. There is a separate, finished jig for each type of rib on the plans. Once again, everything was done in CAD and then routed out of MDF with a CNC machine. Perfect. Every time. The setup must have been quite something.
Despite the spectacular appearance, the jigs need a little work. Specifically, they must be waxed, thoroughly, so I don't glue the first rib into the jig forever. A quick e-mail to Bill produced the answer I sought... and saved me the hours I would have burned developing my own learning curve... Instead, I got to use his! Here's what you do.
First, drill out the 1/2 inch holes in jigs before waxing. These holes are there so you'll be able to push the rib out from behind once it's assembled. Trust me, the cap strips and diagonals are a VERY tight fit in the jig so you'll have to push the assembled rib out.
Get Johnson's Paste Wax (see photo 1) at the local ACE Hardware store and a 2 inch brush. Get a hair dryer or heat gun and heat the surfact of the wax. When it just starts to liquify and pool, dip your brush in and get to work.
WARNING" the wax is flamable. So don't let the heat stay on it longer than necessary to get the top of the can to liquify.
Also, if you get clumps in your wax on the jig, you can heat it with a little heat and brush it out.
Let the wax dry VERY thoroughly before making parts. Like a day or two. Then scrape off any excess wax, heat it again with the heat gun, let it dry another day, and make your parts.
