EAA 186 RV builders,
Today I was getting ready to attach the vertical stabilizer to the tailcone when I noticed three empty countersunk holes at the top of the aft tailcone rib assembly (see picture). I thought humm, I wonder when something is going into those holes that will soon be covered by the vertical stabilizer spare. After investigating the instructions, I discovered an uh-oh. Back in October, of the 86 rivets within the aft rib assembly, I only inserted 83. I did not squeeze in these top three AN426AD4-4 rivets.
Now that the tailcone is attached to the aft rib assembly I cannot get my squeezer (3” yoke) in there to squeeze these three rivets. The distance from the 3” x 2” hole in the center of the aft rib to the rivets is 5”. I checked Avery, Spruce, and Cleveland – the largest yoke they have is 4”. One inch too short.
Thus I am now facing bucking these three rivets in an awkward place. I am able to reach the back of the rivets with my fingers through the 3” x 2” hole in the center of the aft rib. Also, the front of the rib assembly is accessible from the open end at the front of the tailcone… but the tailcone is 9’ long.
After this Saturday’s EAA meeting, would any of you like to help me with this challenge?
In need of help,
Gary
PS: I have never bucked a rivet, nor even seen it done.
