Brief Description:  Rudder Skeleton Assembly 1

I start riveting the rudder skeleton together while waiting on a new back riveting set, as the one I had has broken twice. The first piece I worked on was the R-704 tip rib and the R-713 counterbalance skin. I was able to use my new pneumatic squeezer to set the few AN426AD3-3.5 rivets. I like this tool!

A few days after calling Van’s, the new R-710, rudder horn brace was delivered. During this time I spend lots of time reading and looking at how other -8 builders tackled this part. I decided to make a cardboard cutout of the part that gets trimmed off. I marked both sides, sniped to the line and finished the part with the Scotch-Brite wheel on the bench grinder.

I then test fitted the part, marking where the R-704, bottom rib attaches and then took it apart. I did this three times filing a little off each time until I was happy with the fit. Once there, I drilled the #40 holes and matched drilled the #30 hole. After deburring, breaking and smoothing the edges, and cleaning, I sprayed some primer on the part and it is ready to be assembled.

The skeleton is all clecoed together and ready to start squeezing some rivets. The key here is to keep go back to the plans in order to get the correct rivet sizes. Take you time and read all the notes and call outs on each section.
