Brief Description:  First Flight

The big day had arrived and on Saturday 6th February 2010 - 2 years and 3 months (1,489 hours - 744 hours each) after starting the build we did our first flight. Peter Kowald put his hand up to test flight the plane. His comments were -:

Subject: FW: VH - OAO...Inaugural flight on Saturday 6th February 2010
Congratulations as the owners of such a lovely aircraft. The dedication, motivation and sacrifices it takes to build an aircraft should not be underestimated. Few aircraft are impressive, however in this case you have build a machine that I know you are going to have many adventures and lot of fun in. It is a joy to fly and is both manoeuvrable and stable. In my opinion a very safe aircraft and a very joyous aircraft to fly.

If you guys are not over the moon then you should be!!!......Well done.

PS Darren,

I forgot to tell you, that on take-off be prepared and indeed pre-empt a lot of Right Rudder. The take-off speed is very low (as you know) and you have a whopping big engine, developing a lot of power that makes for a lot of ā€˜Pā€™ effect. I did not use full power on take off for this reason, I used about 80% on the roll lifted the nose at 50 knots and then very gently applied the rest of the power to launch into the sky and was well and truly airborne before the full power was on ā€“ with heaps of right rudder.

PSS Darren & Tim
It might pay to have your Fun Meter, rescaled and calibrated for your first flights.
And if you need more testing done (ie stall characteristics with the spats and pants on. let me know.

Cheers, Peter

Tim and I watched 2 years and three months of our life fly for the first time yesterday. Apologies for the crap video operator.

A big thanks to Peter Kowald who offered to take it on its maiden flight, his attention to detail and calmness throughout took all of the stress out of the day. Thanks also to all of those who helped with the building of OAO. All that is left now is a 25 hour fly off, the fitting of all the nice bits (wheel pants etc) and a coat
