Brief Description:  Pilot Drilling FWD Fuselage

I started tonight thinking that I wouldn't get much accomplished, but I was pleasantly surprised with my progress. I was able to get everything square, level, and obtain the dimensions I was looking for, so I decided to start pilot drilling.

I had to trim the ends of the upper forward cross-member in order to achieve the 32" width at the top of the fuselage. I've read that other builders have had to do the same. To make sure everything was staying level while fitting the parts, I left the big level I have across the middle of the fwd side panels.

Fitting the lower skin was a little more troublesome. It was difficult to hold the side panels and the skin properly to get the correct match-up along the left and right edges. I managed to clamp the front edge (the aft edge was already clecoed) and tape the skin to the LH and RH side panels to keep everything secure while pilot drilling the lower longerons.

You can see in the first picture I had to use a strap duplicator to drill two hole in each lower forward motor mount fitting. I would have drilled these from the inside with my angle drill, but it would have required the removal of two of the fitting bolts. Luckily I had a #30 strap duplicator.
