Brief Description:  Prepared rudder stiffeners

Started work on the rudder today. The first step is to prepare the rudder stiffeners, which will be riveted to the skin to provide strenght and rigidity, since it is too thin to have much of a skeleton. The directions and drawings were a little confusing on the forst steps, but after reviewing another builder's site and looking at the parts along with the drawings it all became clear; it is a 2 step process to cut these. Fist you cut each stiffener angle into two stiffeners, and cut the trailing edge angle. Then you place them on the rudder skin and mark the appropriate lentgh for each stiffener, marking the last hole needed toward the front. Then you cut away the excess in front of the last hole. After cutting these all to length they were match drilled to the skin, drilling into plywood so they could be clecoed down to the skin and plywood. After confirming that the front spar and trailing edge angled were clear the stiffeners were removed from the skin, edges smoothed and corners rounded using the Scotch-Brite wheels on the grinder, and were dimpled using the substructure dimple dies in the DRDT-2 dimpler. The stiffeners are made of alclad, just like the skins, so I will not prime them. They are now ready to be riveted to the skins.
