Brief Description:  Tired of looking at the cowling

"Fitting the two cowl pieces, which are cast with no reference lines, is something I have been avoiding for a couple of months. I was not even sure if I wanted to use the Vans cowling pieces or the ones from Viking. I finally settled on the Viking cowl parts and started cutting. First was a wooden piece to fit it to, makes sure the spinner will be in the right place when you mount the prop. It is made with a shoulder on the rear, so you can butt the cowling up against the shoulder, then when mounting the prop spinner, you will have approximately 3/8 of an inch clearance.
Using that as a reference point, one can then trim the rest of the edges to fit the plane and the lower half of the cowling. It is a bit lighter than the Vans cowling, and therefore more floppy. The Zenith 750 at Oshkosh solved that problem by adding a fiberglass stiffener on the underside of the top cowl, several inches forward of the rear edge. Made a nice difference. With so much floppiness, it is hard to find the proper trim points, may have to make some alignment holes to keep it where I want it to be."
