Brief Description:  Fighting Filters

"In checking the fuel filtration of the Viking, I was uncomfortable with several aspects of it. First off the ""suction"" filters shown in photo 3 by K & N are very vague on filtration. An email to K & N revealed that they have NO IDEA of what micron level they filter! Oh well, the one after the pump will catch it won't it? Well that is also a ""maybe so, maybe not"" situation, nobody knows the micron filtration of it either! Couple this with the fact that pressure is being read BEFORE the fuel rail filter, with no monitoring of rail pressure is simply not acceptable, you would not know you had a problem until just after the fan quit turning!
Research led me to believe that the injectors should be protected to trash smaller than 10 microns, so I found an outstanding filter at Aircraft Spruce, photos one and two below, http://www.golanproducts.com/filters.html. This is a lifetime SS filter, that can be cleaned as needed. I intend to place a fuel pressure sensor AFTER it to monitor its status, Skyview will accomodate this easily. I have yet to determine if I will even use the suction K&N filters, they are checking to see if someone somewhere has rated the filtration. There are very adequate filters available that can be cleaned if needed that are far more reliable than the plastic "" lawnmower type"" filters K&N has to offer. I have seen these develop cracks in the housing, in the case of the Viking, it is plumbed so that if one cracked the other pump and filter would become useless as well!"
