"I just wasted a couple days entertaining a free loader who apparently just wanted to get some Ercoupe time for free.
Buying and selling aircraft has changed LOTS in the last decade or two. It used to be that only honest people sold or bought an aircraft it seemed.
I have had a total of three flaky tire kickers posing as buyers. What a waste of time and money. This most recent (who had non revenue fly priv) came down from Dubuque IA, kept telling me for two days how he wanted the plane and how good it was, and how he would deliver the money for it. As soon as I let him fly it for an hour or so, he was instantly ready to head back home (after telling me how perfectly it flew). No money down, just said he would be back in a couple of months to fly it again and buy it if I had updated the Garmin GPS database and it still flew OK! Yeah, right. Only if I see some money first and still have it.
Maybe they grow on trees in Iowa. Another Iowa buyer agreed to annual it as his pre buy inspection. After the IA got it all apart, called the IA and asked for his money back, had changed his mind! Left me with a plane scattered all over the place in pieces. He actually had flunked a medical on psychiatric reasons, but did not know he had been refused. Yeah, right. I went ahead and had the annual completed, now every buyer wants to disassemble it AGAIN to suit himself. More expensive and trouble.
The third was a real nut case. He offered to trade in a street rod. After I sent an inspector to look at the street rod (in Reno NV) and approved of his trade in, we had a deal! I made arrangements to get the Jeepster street rod delivered to me, and was waiting for the cash and him to come get the Ercoupe. After some fancy dancing around, he claimed he had no license to fly, and could find nobody to come get it. I had friends who would gladly deliver it to him, but he then just stopped communicating.
