Brief Description:  Riveted seatbacks; painted cabin

Riveted together the freshly primed seatbacks. Also, blind riveted the F704 covers that form a box structure with the center section extensions and side skins. Set up the fresh air/HVLP system again and mixed the BASF single-stage Urethane paint. Ratio per the instructions was 4:1:1 (paint, reducer, hardener). I used a reducer for 70-85 deg F, and it was just above 70 ambient when I started. I tried to mix one batch ahead of the one I was using to allow some induction time, but I must not have been painting fast enough. After about the 1st hour of painting, it started to thicken slightly and the finish grew rougher as the runout decreased. This may have been due in part to the fact that the air supply with this system heats the air some which may have put me out of my reducer's ideal range. Anyway, I thought I could extend the pot life by adding a bit more reducer...what a mistake! Within minutes of adding reducer, the paint in the gun started to congeal and I ended up having to stop before I finished (I also lost about half a cup of paint). It took me 2 hours to get the gun clean using MEK as lacquer thinner just wasn't getting the job done. I'll have to go buy some more paint tomorrow and wil ask them for the proper solvent as well as get some MEK proof gloves, if such a thing exists! Regarding the finish, I'm happy with it overall. I'm glad I did the cabin first while the runout was still good. I got 2 good coats on the cabin, so I'm happy with that. The panels and parts I did are o.k., some of them are a bit "textured" by the curing paint. I didn't get to the seatbacks. That will be tomorrow.
