Brief Description:  Turtle Deck

The first order of business before installing the turtle
deck skin for the final; time is to locate the three formers
and using a straight edge check all of the rivet flanges
to be certain they are lined up. If the flanges are not
positioned correctly, the rivet will grab the flange and
you will end up with an indentation in the skin and this
is not what I want to happen.
You can see in the second picture I have used duct
tape to maintain the TD shape. I can then add or remove
the formers with out fear of getting a kink in the skin.
The skin is only .020 thick so if you try and wrap it around
the formers in the fuselage, a kink can occur. Just ask
Tony Spicer. I took the third picture so you can see how
well the duct tape maintains the desired shape. My next step
will be to cleco the first two formers to the skin and then remove
the duct tape. The most aft former has to be riveted in place
prior to installing the skin and it is not an issue to do this.
I don't think you can easily rivet the aft former with the
skin on. I could be wrong but I did not want to take a chance.
The entire process is quick and easy and the turtle deck
falls right into place.
