Been down for a couple of days with a whopper of a cold. Not 100% but got back out today to see if everything still fit after riveting and prosealing the hinges. The good news --- IT does! the bad news --- getting the hinge pins in is a royal PITA. I can see why more repeat offenders are going to Camlocs. I went with the hidden hinge for appearance purposes, but..... So I spent most of the day working with the hinge and hinge pins to try and facilitate making them easier to insert and remove. The vertical side hinges are really NOT a problem. The upper aft hinges are a real bear especially where the pin meets the curve. I rebeveled the hinges around the curve and sharpened the point on the pin, applied a little teflon, and I can get them in with some 'encouragement' Taking the cowl off and on after paint is definately going to be a 2 person operation. The horizontal hinge pins get inserted from inside the cockpit, BUT... it's very difficult to get the pin to align with the 1st hinge eyelet. Solution, I got some 3/16" brake line that was flared, and cut the flared ends off, countersunk them a bit more, and the floxed them in position with the hinge pin inserted. This should make for a 'funnel' target when the pin comes out through the firewall. More good news, the front of the cowl has been off by 1/8" around the spinner. I took the mounting plate off and clecoed some angle alum and it brings everything flush. When 6 ply layups are applied to the lower half and then nutplates attached some #8 ss countersunk screws will bring everything up flush!
