Spent more time sanding existing filler/structure. After posting yesterday, I reveiced an e-mail from John Cox, who's opinion has benefitted me several times. he informed me that both Bondo and Icing were subject to shrinkage after being exposed to heat ususally shows up 18-24 months down the road. He included several pictures from affected Lancairs to demonstrate the issue. So, now I'm searching for an aircraft grade filler. The aplication is purely cosmetic as the only reason I'm doing this is to improve the appearance of the very irregular interior finish Van's leaves you with on the cabin. I'm pondering finishing off with the fillers as grinding/digging out what I've installed would be more work than the repair for cracks if/when they appear and it may cause unintended weakness to the underlying finerglass. I'm pondering continuing with the filler and then doing a 2 ply lay-up using some extremely fine weave glass cloth that I have. the resulting surface would still have to have a 'featherfil' like product applied and sanded to fill the cloth weave, but the surface would be smooth/level at least and the glass cloth should hide/help resist the cracking/shrinking.
Fiberglass sanded 'smooth
Why can't van's turn out better quality fiberglass components?
