Brief Description:  Metal conditionning - Part1

Like many others, I’ve spend a fair amount of time reading about priming the parts before assembly. No wonder why political parties exist; there are as many opinions as there are builders. Everyone knows that most of the RV aluminum parts are having an “alclad” finish (at least the skins and ribs) which is a natural corrosion protection barrier for the aluminum. So why bother with priming these parts at all? The problem comes from the fact that you just can’t leave the rib or skin “unprepared” and use them as they are. You’ve got to deburr the holes and edges thus damaging that nice alclad finish. This leaves you with two choices: metal conditioning or priming. Or perhaps do both.

The problem with priming is that it is a time consuming and messy process. Besides, primer adds considerable weight to your aircraft. Knowing that one gallon of primer (or paint for that matter) weights around 10lbs, it is that much weight added to your aircraft for each of them. Depending on the size of your bird, you can easily add 20 to 30lbs right there. In my book, this means around 30 to 45 min less flight time or I’d have to bring with me a smaller passenger or cargo load. Metal conditioning with alodine isn’t the right solution either. Also, alodine alone isn’t a long term corrosion barrier. Besides, and with respect to your health, aodine is a very nasty product and is a serious environmental hazard by itself. You can’t dispose of it in the drain.

I've read somewhere that SANCHEM is proposing an excellent alternative to alodine and primer. It does protect from corrosion and if you really want to prime, it does promote eztremely well adhesion of the primer to the metal. Here's the website link: http://www.sanchem.com/safegard_cc_types.html

Beware, this website is very informative but looks terrible. The quality of their products surpases by far how their site looks but who cares? They have a good product and the price is decent and this where it counts.
