Brief Description:  FAB Install & Exhaust Headers

Riveted together the baffle fabric and backer strips to the Filtered Air Box inlet. Found that in the side areas with 2 layers of overlapping baffle fabric plus 2 backer stips, the longest #40 rivets I have are not quite long enough. So after testing on a few scraps, I enlarged these holes to #30 and install the next longer length rivets in #30 size, without enlarging the dimples to #30 since the strips were already riveted in place in the thinner areas.

With the airbox complete, removed the airbox mounting plate from the throttle body and then re-installed with the gasket provided by Lycoming with the throttle body. Coated both sides of this gasket with a very thin amount of mold release. After torquing the 4 bolts holding the plate to the throttle body, installed safety wire between each set of 2 bolts to ensure they don't come loose.

Installed the FAB to the mounting plate, and then installed the bottom cowl to confirm proper fit. While it did fit, I think I should shorten the baffle fabric material a little bit for a better fit and easier installation of the cowl.

After removing the lower cowl, started work on installing the exhaust system. Assembled the 3 header pipes into the 3-into-one pieces for each side, following the sketch provided with the Vedderman exhaust system. Removed the exhaust port covers from the engine, cleaning up the preservative oil with paper towels. Then mounted the headers to the exhaust ports on each side of the engine and torqued the header nuts per the Vedderman specifications. Had to purchase a 1/4" universal joint socket adapter to get to a couple of the inside header nuts.
