Brief Description:  Install Backup Alternator onto Engine

Removed the oil filter and the oil filter mounting block from the engine rear. Had to remove the Vernatherm and both magnitos to remove the bottom 2 bolts from the filter mount. Checked with B&C Tech Support to confirm I understood the steps required to install the backup alternator, including the new right angle oil filter mount and spacer blocks for the filter mount and alternator.

Removed the vacuum pump flange cover from the rear of the engine. Removed the 4 studs for the vacuum pump (using double nuts to alllow them to be backed out) and installed replacement longer studs to hold the alternator. Torqued the new studs into the engine to 120 in-lbs. since the alternator will get torqued to 90 - 120 in-lbs.

Removed the single stud for the oil filter block. It will be replaced with a longer bolt to hold the new filter block and spacer. Installed the Vernatherm into the new oil filter block, using a new aluminum crush washer. Safety wired the vernatherm to the filter block. Talked to B&C Tech again regarding the filter bypass in the filter block that could not be installed into the new block. They explained that the new filter provided has a bypass valve built into the filter, and so will need to use a different model filter.

Installed the backup alternator onto the engine using the spacer block and 2 gaskets with gasket compound provided by B&C. Tightened the mounting nuts progressively, and then torqued the bolts to 95 in-lbs using a crow foot wrench with the torque wrench.
