Brief Description:  Top Cowl Side Hinges

Installed both side hinges on the top cowl.

Layed out rivet holes by measuring from the top edge of the bottom cowl up to the center of the top hinge half mounting flange. Subtracted 1/32" to account for the split line and used that measurement for the height of the rivet holes above the top cowl bottom edge and drew lines on both sides. Layed out the rivet holes along these lines with 1 inch spacing per the plans.

Installed the top cowl onto the bottom cowl, secure it with the rear hinge and front clecoes, then used duct tape to pull the two halves together along the sides. Drilled the rivet holes and clecoed each hole as drilled, then machine countersunk for the AN3 rivets.

Removed the clecoes and the top cowl. Removed the top hinge halves and deburred the rivet holes. Re-installed the top hinge halves to the top cowl with clecoes on the workbench, and riveted them to the cowl using the pneumatic squeezer. Had one rivet that I squeezed slightly cocked, so drilled it out and replaced it.

Sanded down the foam attached to the oil door yesterday, beveling the edges approx. 45 deg. per plans. Cut a piece of 6 lb. fiberglass to lay over the foam and extend beyond the edges, and a piece of dacron peel ply slightly larger. Mixed up 2 pumps of epoxy with slow hardener and painted the foam and oil door edges with it. Layed the fiberglass over the foam and door edges and saturated it with epoxy using a chip brush. Layed the peel ply over the fiberglass and used a squeege to smooth it onto the fiberglass and the oil door edges. Left to cure.

After confirming that the left inlet ramp fit properly around the prop governor, sanded the bonding surfaces of the ramps and the cowl, mixed up 2 pumps of epoxy with slow hardener and added some Cab-O-Sil to thicken the mixture. Painted the mating surfaces with the epoxy mixture and clecoed the inlet ramps to the inside of the top cowl. Left to cure.
