Brief Description:  Cowl Edges

Marked the top cowl to match the bottom cowl edges. Removed the top cowl.
Trimmed the top cowl to the match lines using a diamond disk in the Dremel tool. Sanded the edges straight and smooth using 60 grit sandpaper glued with carpet tape to a 14" long 2 x 4.

Re-attached the top cowl to check for edge match.

Beveled the eyelets on the top cowl rear hinge F-1001N on the inside of the curved areas. After checking with Van's Builder Support, beveled both the forward and aft halves of the hinges. Used a small grinding wheel with the Dremel to bevel the hinges riveted to the top cowl, then cleaned them up with a file. Used just the file on the aft hinge halves attached to the fuselage to bevel the eyelets (no dremel tool used). Used a very small flat file to finish the bevels and clean up the burrs. Used a small rat tail file to ciean up the eyelet hole edges. Ran the aluminum hinge pins through the hinges after beveling to check.

Fabricated hinge pins for the cowl hinges in place of the aluminum pins, using SSP-090 hinge pin for the top cowl, and SSP-120 hinge pin for the side and bottom pins (per plans).

Fabricated two F-1001V Cowl Pin Retainers from HINGE PIANO 1/8.

Created two COWL-10-03 Side Hinges from AN257-P3 piano hinge. Marked the right lower hinge half for 1/32" mounting depth above the lower cowl. Layed out rivet holes on the right side of the bottom cowl per the plans. Clamped the bottom half hinge to the bottom cowl using cleco spring clamps, then drilled the #40 rivet holes, inserting clecoes in each hole as they were drilled.

Marked the left lower hinge half for 1/32" mounting depth above the lower cowl. Layed out rivet holes on the left side of the bottom cowl per the plans.
