Brief Description:  Nose Gear Fairing

Completed the nose gear fairing.

Drilled the fiberglass fairing for rivets. Inserted the hinge and match drilled the hinge for the rivets. When match drilling the second side, clamped the trailing edge of the fairing to ensure both sides were aligned with trailing edges matched/aligned. (May have set the hinge a bit too low as the trailing edges do not lie flat together.) Trimmed the hinge length to match.

Counter sunk the fiberglass rivet holes and then riveted both sides of the hinge into place using a hand squeezer per the construction drawings. Bent one end of the hinge pin 90 deg. and then cut the other end of the pin to length.

Re-installed the fairing on the gear and sighting through the fiberglass drilled the holes for the mounting flanges. Removed the fairing and installed nut plates to the mounting flanges using the pre-drilled mounting holes. Found it difficult to installed the top rivet of each nut plate due to limited space. Could not use the squeezer on these rivets. Drove the rivets using a very small bucking bar, but had to drill out a couple and re-do them as I didn't get the face flush against the flange.

Re-installed the fairing using the mounting hardware specified in the drawings. Found that I needed to trim the fairing nose some more in order to achieve the specified 3/16" min. spacing between the bottom of the gear fairing and the top of the wheel fairing. Then re-installed and checked again, and found that when the wheel was turned almost to the stops the gear fairing dragged against the top of the wheel fairing. Removed the gear fairing again and trimmed the spots that were rubbing. Re-installed and checked again, finding one small area still slightly too tight. Was able to trim these two areas in-place using a thin Perma Grit flat file.
