Brief Description:  Main Gear Leg Fairings

Cut both U-1017B Gear Leg Fairing Hinges from the piano hinge .063 x 6 ft. Marked both hinges for rivet holes per the drawings.

Positioned one of the hinges into the left fairing, clamped with spring clamps and drilled one side for rivets. Marked that side for final length, then removed and deburred the drilled side.

Separated the hinge halves, clecoed the dirlled side into place and countersunk the fiberglass for AN3 rivets. Removed the hinge, cleaned up all sharpie marks, reinstalled. Riveted the drilled side into place using the hand squeezer and set the rivets to less than normal to avoid damaging the fiberglass. Held the fairing upright by cradling it in 2 wooden screw clamps, and proped it open with a small 1" x 1" x 2" wooden block to allow easier access to do the hand riveting.

Installed the remaining hinge half onto the riveted half with the hinge pin, clamped the loose side in place and drilled the rivet holes. Separated the hinge halves, removed the half just drilled and deburred it. Clecoed it back in place and countersunk the rivet holes. Cleaned up sharpie marks and riveted it into place.

Reassembled the hinge halves and sanded the ends down flush with the fairing ends. Then realized that for the hinge pin end to be secured inside the fairing bottom, I needed to remove the hinge barrel on each side of the lower end. Carefully cut them off with the dremel tool using a metal cutting disk, then filed them smooth. Drilled a #40 hole for securing the pin with safety wire per the plans.

Stopped work early as heavy rains were causing water to flood the floor of my shop.
