Brief Description:  Installed Landing Gear Legs

Installed the main landing gear legs.

Found that the fuselage sockets for the main gear legs were too rough from minor corrosion for the gear legs to fit into the sockets. Initially tried chilling the gear leg mounting point using a cooling/lube product, which helped a bit but wasn't enough to get the leg through the socket. So used a small sanding drum with the Dremel tool to clean out the sockets, both at the bottom of the mounting tube and at the top at the locations were the gear leg makes secure contact. Then used a buffing disk with red compound to futher smooth the interior of the sockets and cleaned them with acetone.

Applied a thin coat of wheel bearing grease to the top and bottom sockets of the main gear mounting tubes and worked the gear leg up into position (still a tight fit but I was now able to get the gear leg into position). Used a 7.9 mm reamer to slightly enlarge the bolt holes so that the mounting bolts would fit through, and secured the bolts with the nuts and washers specified and torqued to 100 in-lbs.

Found that the nose gear mounting sockets for the VA-144 bushings were not smooth enough due to paint overspray and minor corrosion. Cleaned both sockets out using the same sanding drum and buffing disk as with the main gear sockets.

Applied a thin coat of wheel bearing grease to the VA-144 bushings and inserted the into the sockets. Reamed out the mounting bolt holes in the gear leg using the 7.9 mm reamer to remove paint, and installed the bolts with washers and castle nuts per the drawings. Torqued the castle nuts to 100 in-lbs and then adjusted slightly to align the castle nut with the drilled hole in the bolts and secured each with a cotter pin. Torque painted both nuts.
