Brief Description:  Installed Vent Fans In Panel Top

In order to keep the avionics heat from building up under the top skin above the control panel, I installed two 120 mm vent ports into the top skin between the front and aux. panels. With computer fans installed, these will not only ventilate the avionics, but will also provide warm air flow onto the wind screen for defogging/defrosting purposes.

After some research on-line, I found a high quality vent plate made of aluminum from NewEgg.com with the description of "AC Infinity AIRPLATE A3, Ventilation Grill for PC Computer AV Electronic Cabinets," at the following link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=AC+Infinity+AIRPLATE+A3%2C+Ventilation+Grill+for+PC+Computer+AV+Electronic+Cabinets%2C&N=-1&isNodeId=1

After studying the wind screen location on the plans, I determined a suitable location for the two vent plates. I then layed out the plates onto the top of the panel and drilled the first screw hole using a #19 drill through the top skin to match the mounting hole in the plate. After installing a #8 screw into the first hole, I marked the second hole through the plate mounting holes and drilled that hole with a #19 drill, installing a second screw and nut. Then match hole drilled the other 2 corner mounting holes. With the screen removed from the plate and the plate firmly mounted to the top of the skin with screws, I marked the vent hole on the skin with a sharpie. After removing the plate and mounting screws, I marked and drilled 4 additional holes in the top skin that are centered between the 4 corner holes already drilled. These will be match drilled through the vent plate after the vent hole is cut and the plate has been mounted beneath the top skin.

I then cut the hole in the skin with a sabre saw and a 32 tooth blade, and finished cutting the hole to the outside of the marked hole using a Dremel tool with a course sanding drum. I then used a half round file to smooth the hole, followed by sand paper to smooth the finished hole.
