Brief Description:  A/C Compressor Mounting

After talking to Bill G. and getting my questions answered, proceeded with the A/C compressor installation. However, in my initial fit I had the idler pully below the starter. Determined this was wrong when the belt didn't fit right.

Reinstalled with the idler pully above the starter, but couldn't get the compressor brace to fit as the belt was too short. Removed the compressor and the compressor mounting bracket in order to remove the spacer shims between the mounting bracket and engine block. When removing the bracket, one of the stud bolts came out of the engine, leaving the nut attached. After a quick trip to Lowes to buy a couple of 3/8-14 course thread nuts to hold the stud was able to remove the lock nut from the stud. Reinstalled the stud bolt with blue loctite.

With the mounting block off, painted the slightly enlarged holes with etching primer since slightly enlarging the holes removed the annodizing from the holes. After the paint dried, reinstalled the mounting block without any spacer shims, with grease on the stud bolts where they pass through the mounting block holes as recommended by Bill to prevent corrosion.

Reinstalled the compressor and tightened it up with the adjusting arm almost fully collapsed (shortened). At first it appeared to fit, but on further inspection the idler pully was rubbing on one of the starter case screw heads. Determined that a slightly larger belt would be required. Determined the next larger belt length from a Gates table was Gates Part K040440 and located one at the local O'Reilly Auto Parts store.

Once again removed the compressor to allow the longer belt to be installed. After reinstalling the compressor and tightening it I determined the the idler pully was now rubbing on the compressor pully. Tried adjusting the adjustment arm outward but there was not enough space to clear. Decided that perhaps with the longer belt I now needed the spacer shims behind the mounting block.
