Brief Description:  Installed Nav Antenna Into Vertical Stabilizer

Decided to install a VHF navigation antenna for VOR/Localizer/Glide Slope into the top of the vertical stabilzer. Selected the RAMI AV-520 antenna just below the counter weight for the rudder. Was originally planning to put it under the vertical stabilizer fiberglass tip, but the space wasn't wide enough.

Drilled holes for the 2 antenna elements at the point where the side flanges have an open spot, splitting the distance between the rivets. Then inserted the antenna elements into the antenna base upside down and determined the location for the mounting screw holes. Drilled these holes for the nut plates, and then used it to determine the location for the nut plate rivets. Since I couldn't get to the back side, determined the best approach was to use CS-4 rivets to hold the nut plates.

Slightly machine countersunk the #30 holes for the nut plates, as there was no way to dimple these holes in the completed vertical stab. Bought a 4 ft. length of 3/16" steel rod from the home store, and threaded one end to screw into the nut plate. Then ran the rod through the center nut plate hole in the stabilizer top to the bottom, threaded the nut plate onto the rod, and pulled the rod up until the nut plate was in position. Then clecoed one rivet hole of the nut plate, and inserted the CS-4 rivet into the other rivet hole. Had to then unscrew and remove the rod to allow room for the rivet puller and pulled the rivet. Removed the cleco and inserted the second rivet and pulled it.

Drilled the center hole for the coax cable and connector at 5/8 inch, in order for the connector to fit through.

Cut a piece of aluminum skin to fit over the antenna base to protect it from weather, drilled and dimpled holes for the 2 mounting bolts. Will likely seal this plate to the top of the antenna base with RTV at the time of final antenna installation.

Also made up the 2 fuel vent lines for the wings to be installed when the wings are installed.
