Brief Description:  First 3 Flights

First Flight: Oil door popped open on cross wind leg. CHTs too high so returned to land. Didn't use flaps during flight.

Closed oil door and used aluminum tape to hold it closed. Also taped cowl gaps at firewall closed to improve cooling. (Later thoughts are that this didn't help as the cooling air is held in by the baffle fabric so it can't get to the firewall so can't excape through these gaps.) Checked for fluid leaks and found none.

Second Flight: CHTs still running too high, so made a single extended length pattern and landed. Again, no flaps used on this flight.

Drilled out the 3 rivets on each side and removed the air dams CB-1010C and CB-1002C to improve cooling (as suggested by both Vic Syracuse and Rich Jankowski).

Third Flight: CHTs still high but better. Climbed slowly at 130 kts to 6000 ft and flew to Eagle Lake. CHTs dropped about the time we reached Eagle Lake. Did 180 at Eagle Lake to return to Wharton. Performed 360 deg. turns (~ 30 deg bank) in each direction. Slowed speed and lowered flaps. At full flaps, had to use right aileron/stick to hold level, indicating that the flaps are not equal on each side (right flap is lower than left). Retracted flaps and returned to KARM at cruise speed, over flying airport and then entering the pattern down wind. Landed with 1/2 flaps.

Rich Jankowski flew with me as Qualified Pilot for first 3 flights.
