Brief Description: Unsuccessful First Engine Start

Installed grip tape onto the foot pegs to eliminate slips. Attempted first engine start. No success. Engine spins and then suddenly stops and then resumes spin. Perhaps retard not workng right? Checked and photographed all G3X and GTN config screens. Charged aircraft battery.
