Brief Description:  Fitting the Central Console

Trimmed the bottom of the console back by 1/8" to allow it to sit lower on the tunnel cover so that the bottom of the sides line up with the bottom of the tunnel cover mounting flanges.

Used the hole duplicator strap to drill 3 more holes on each side of the center console to mount it to the tunnel & tunnel cover.

Tried to fit the handle shaft (VA-178A) through the hole for it in the tunnel cover, and found that the hole in both the tunnel cover and the detent plate (VA-178D) are too small for the handle shaft. Since opening up this center hole will reduce what is already a very small rivet edge distance for mounting the detent plate, I called Van's Builder Assist to confirm that enlarging the holes was correct. Mitch Lock (President) answered the builders assist phone, and confirmed that the detent plate rivets are not structural and I should open up the hole to allow the shaft to fit.

Enlarged the holes slowly using a file, as a drill would not work due to the detent plate additional openings. Once the shaft fit into the tunnel cover, installed the shaft on the valve step and secured the tunnel cover to the tunnel. Measured the amount of the shaft that sticks out above the tunnel cover as 25/32", as this is the amount it will need to stick out above the center console.

Removed the tunnel cover and attached the center console to the tunnel cover using hardware store 8-32 screws and nuts. Used my portable drill press, the bottom of which fit within the tunnel cover, to drill the required 3/8" hole through the center console, drilling through the tunnel cover into the console in a straight line 90 deg. to the tunnel cover.

Measured the distance above the console top with the valve shaft inserted through the hole in the console and slightly displaced so it rests on the cover top. Then subtacted this amount from the total length of the shaft to determine the distance from the top of the tunnel cover to the top of the console. This distance of 1.75" is the amount the valve shaft will need to be
