Brief Description:  Fitting Cowl & Drilling for Hinge Riveting

Removed the top and bottom cowls and did minor trimming and marked lines for drilling rivet holes for mounting to hinges. Installed the cowl half of all of the mounting hinges (removed after installing the hinges as part of the fuselage top installation to avoid damage to the hinges).

Reinstalled the top and bottom cowl, using duct tape to hold them in place and found that the bottom cowl didn't fit - it was still too long in the back. Marked, removed and trimmed the rear of the lower cowl. Re-installed and found it was still too long, removed and trimmed some more. Re-installed again, maked again and re-installed again. Did this another 2-3 times and finally found it all fit.

In preparing to drill the rivet holes through the cowl backs and hinges, realized that the front of the cowl was now too low in relation to the prop spinner. Used a 1" x 8" board to prop up the front of the cowls into the proper location relative to the spinner. Then in checking the rear of the cowl found that there was now a gap at the back of the bottom cowl. One of the reasons I kept finding the need to trim the lower cowl further was apparently because the front of the cowl was slipping down too low! ARGHHHH!!!

Repositioned the cowl to minimize the gaps at the back while keeping the front centered around the prop hub and spinner. Drilled the rivet holes through the cowl and hinges per the drawings.

Near the end of drilling the last side hinge, found that the drill seemed to be going through the hinge too easily/quickly. Removed a few clecos and looked behind the cowl skin and discovered that the holes drilled per the drawings as 5/16" from the back edge of the cowl were too far back on the hinge and drilled into the edge of the hinge at the hinge knuckle. Measured and determined the approximate location of the center of the hinge flange and re-drilled the last few holes and the rest of the rivet holes in this last hinge.

Will need to check the other hinges and likely need to re-drill some of the rivet holes a
