Brief Description:  Fitting Cowl

Trimmed the sides of the bottom cowl. Re-installed and found I needed to trim a bit more to get it to fit.

Found that the bottom of the cowl behind the spinner was closer to the spinner than the top. Also noted that the top was sitting high. Investigated further and found that the to cowl was sitting on the prop govenor and the inlet ramp needed to be further trimmed. Trimmed and re-installed the top cowl. This time I found the top cowl was sitting on the front engine lifting lug. Removed the cowl, loosened the front lifting lug bolt and rotated the lifting lug to more horizontal. Reinstalled the top cowl and found the left air ramp was still sitting on the prop gov. Removed, trimmed and reinstalled the cowl a couple more times until it would sit lower on the prop spinner.

Re-installed the bottom cowl and noted that the front to side curve was interfering with the bottom fitting equal to the top in front. Called Van's builder support after emailing photos and discussed the problem with obtaining and equal gap behind the spinner and the side curve interference. After discussion, determined that I should have trimmed the sides further around and back (the plans are not clear on the amount of trimming required), so trimmed a small amount from the front edges at where they turn to the sides.

Reinstalled the bottom cowl and found that the rear bottom and sides need further trimming to fit.
