Brief Description:  Fitting Bottom Cowl

Attached the prop govenor cable bracket to the govenor as shown in photos found on Van's Airforce. Then tried setting the top cowl in place but found that the bracket sticks up too high and the cowl hits the top of the bracket. Tried moving the prop gov. screws to alternate holes shown in photos, but my Hartzell govenor doesn't have these alternate holes, so re-assemble the govenor. Sent email to Bill at Airflow systems asking for suggestions regarding the mounting bracket.

Placed the top cowl back in place without the govenor control bracket in place, and secured it with duct tape.

Tried to put the lower cowl in place, but found that the slot cut previously for the nose gear was too narrow/too tight. Also determined the slot was too short for installation of the bottom cowl around the 3 blade prop. Cut a new 2" hole for a longer and wider slot, and then cut a longer and wider slot to the hole.

Started fitting the bottom cowl and determined that the left inlet ramp required trimming to fit around the AC compressor pully and belt. Trimmed and tested fit 3 times before getting this right.

With the inlet ramp fitting, then found that the bottom of the AC compressor pully was hitting the bottom cowl. Cut a slot in the bottom left side of the cowl for the AC compressor, testing and trimming the opening 3 times until it fit. Will need to fabricate a "bump" in the cowl to close in the slot cut for the AC compressor.

With the lower cowl in place, with a cleco inserted in each side at the front around the spinner where previously drilled, proped up the back of the bottom cowl with a step platform plus 2x4's, and then marked the back bottom area and trimmed per the plans. Re-installed and found that I needed to trim an additional ~1/16" to fit at the lower attachment hinges.

Re-installed the bottom cowl and used duct tape to hold the back of the cowl to the fuselage, then marked the sides of the bottom cowl to trim for fitting to the fuselage side mounting hinges.
